I found out I was too competent. I was doing too many things for them. Our goal was to keep them in their home as long as possible. I found out, when I did a lot of things for them, they let me. Just like teaching a child to tie their shoe. Should you always tie their shoe, they will never remember how to do it themselves. Together with our parents, if we always take care of it, they will soon forget how to do it and slide into dependence.

Identify personal priorities. Nobody can place your family's priorities for you. But if you do not take time to think them through, articulate them clearly and live them out, you will find you have lived a life that is not a true reflection of your internal priorities.

About a decade ago their health began to decline. I am the only one of their kids living in their city. Needless to say, most the responsibility for caring for them has fallen to me. Caring for them is an honor. But, it is not without stress. In actuality, it is among the most stressful things I have coped with in my entire life. When I started this 10 years back, there were not a lot of resources readily available.

Stay fit with isometrics. A training DVD is all you need to get yourself back in the type of shape you recall, and you'll need to maintain an active, independent lifestyle far in your senior years.
